Crispy Habanero & Tofu Wontons

Wontons

Yupp, another recipe with habanero peppers because you know I love my spice! LOL happy friday friends! I hope you’re going to the grocery store this weekend because I highly recommend you make my Crispy Habanero & Tofu Wontons at some point! They are crispy on the outside, but fluffy and flavorful on the inside! I’m telling ya – I ate almost 15 of these when I was shooting the pictures!

Wonton Wrappers

If you’re ambitious and want to make your own wonton wrappers from scratch, BE MY GUEST 🙂 I have been buying Nasoya Won Ton Wraps for YEARS now, so check those out if you don’t know which ones to buy. Otherwise, if you live near an Asian grocery store, they will have some great quality ones. I love the Nasoya ones because they are vegan and gluten free!

Steaming vs. Frying

If you want these to be nice and crispy, deep frying is the way to go. You guys know that I don’t post too many fried foods on here, so once in a while I like to share a recipe where you can sit back and indulge on the good things in life! I have tried air-frying, but they crisp is just not the same. If you do want to steam, these wrappers work SO well in a steamer, and you’ll basically get little dumplings out of it! If you’re a fan of dumplings, you must check out my Tandoori Paneer Shumai Dumplings!

Customize the Filling

My initial idea for these wontons was to make them with a mango habanero filling, instead of tofu. Sadly enough, I couldn’t find the perfect mango to use, so I’m saving that for a different recipe 😉 Tofu works so well, and if you aren’t a fan of tofu, you can use the same recipe, but substitute the tofu for meat or seafood. I think paneer would be amazing too 😉

Crispy Habanero & Tofu Wontons
Crispy, but airy, wontons filled with the best spicy tofu mixture you will ever have!

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1/2 tbsp gochujang
  • 1/2 tsp rice wine vinegar
  • 1/2 tbsp gochugaru (or crushed red pepper flakes)
  • 1/3 cup onion (very finely diced)
  • 3 habaneros (very finely diced)
  • 4 cloves garlic (shredded)
  • 1 tsp ginger paste
  • 8 oz extra firm tofu (water drained and crumbled w/ a fork)
  • 1/2 tsp lemon juice
  • 26 wonton wrappers

INTRUCTIONS

  1. To make your habanero & tofu mixture, add your oil to a pan on medium heat. Once hot, add in the soy sauce, gochujang, rice wine vinegar and gochugaru. Mix together until its a thick “sauce”.
  2. Then add in your onion, habanero, garlic, and ginger. Mix well. Let them cook for about 2 minutes.
  3. Add in the crumbled tofu, lemon juice, and desired amount of salt. Taste the mixture for seasoning and adjust per preference. Remove from heat once the tofu is fully warmed through.
  4. To assemble the wontons, take about 2 tsp of tofu mixture per wonton wrapper. Place the tofu right in the center, and then take some water and wet all four sides of the wrapper. Take one corner of the wrapper and fold it over to seal. It will then look like a triangle. Take the bottom two corners and fold to pinch them together. Use more water to seal.
  5. Fry these in oil until golden brown. Drizzle some fresh lemon juice on top and serve with your favorite dipping sauce!

NOTES

  • If you want to make these a little healthier, you can always steam them instead of frying them!
  • This recipe is completely vegan and gluten free 🙂
  • If you want to skip the wontons, you can always make this habanero & tofu mixture and use it in lettuce wraps or in sandwiches.
