Habanero Falafel Sliders

Habanero Falafel SlidersIf you like falafel as much as I do, then you will love my Habanero Falafel Sliders recipe, which is loaded with a Curry Tahini Sauce. Falafel is something that we make regularly in my household.   It’s the perfect way for vegetarian’s to get protein from chickpeas and also be happy (because food is my usual source of happiness). Something that I always disliked about falafel though is that it’s usually always deep fried. I mean I love it – but I hate it.

I wanted to make a healthier version for you guys because we don’t need to be gulping down tablespoons of oil while eating something that can easily be oil free.   Pan frying still uses oil, but you can control how much you put on the pan, and only use an amount that you feel is sufficient. When deep frying, you don’t realize how much of the oil you are actually taking in, so this is definitely a better alternative.

Now you may be wondering why I decided to make this dish in a slider form, as opposed to eating it with pita. Something that really annoyed me when I was growing up eating falafel is that my pita would end up ripping because all of the sauces (and I add sauce to literally every single bite) would make it soggy and then it would get all over my hands because it would be dripping from the bottom.   And why should anyone EVER have to reduce the amount of sauce they use? That’s just not right. So, my mom ended up putting my falafel in between 2 slices of bread for me and I would eat it like a sub sandwich! So even though I still love it with the pita, I prefer making these patties even more and eating them with hamburger buns, or really any type of bread that can handle a butt load of sauce LOL.

This recipe is great because you can freeze the falafel mixture for up to a month if you don’t want to use it all at once. It’s also the best dish to customize because you can throw in any extra veggies or ingredients on to your slider if you need to use something up from the fridge.  If habaneros are too spicy for you, feel free to use any pepper, or omit peppers if you don’t like heat in your food! Habanero Falafel Sliders
Get ready to spice up your bite-sized bliss with my Habanero Falafel Sliders – crispy, flavorful, and topped with a creamy Curry Tahini Sauce!

INGREDIENTS

  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • 3 small tomatoes (sliced)
  • 9 slider buns
  • 1 cup spinach

Falafel

  • 15.5 oz can chickpeas (rinsed and dried)
  • 1/2 cup parsley
  • 1 red onion (roughly chopped)
  • 4 habanero peppers (roughly chopped)
  • 8 cloves garlic (roughly chopped)

Spices

  • 1 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tbsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tbsp cumin powder
  • 1 large lemon (juiced)
  • 2 inch piece fresh ginger (grated)
  • 2 tbsp all purpose flour

Curry Tahini Sauce

  • 1/2 tsp curry powder
  • 1/3 cup greek yogurt
  • 1/2 lemon
  • 2 tbsp tahini

INTRUCTIONS

  1. Take everything from the falafel group and add it to a food processor. Pulse it until everything is broken up, but still remains its texture.  You don’t want it too get too smooth/liquidy.
  2. Pour the falafel mixture into a large bowl.  Add all of your spices and mix well with a spoon or with your hands.  Add salt and black pepper per taste.
  3. Form 9 equal parts of the mixture, and using your hands, roll them into small balls and then flatten them out into the shape of a patty.
  4. Put about 1 tbsp of olive oil on a pan, on medium heat.  Start pan frying your patties, 3 at a time.  Cook the patties for 3 minutes on each side.  Repeat for the remainder of the patties.
  5. While the patties are cooking, mix together all of the curry tahini sauce ingredients and add in a pinch of sugar to balance out the tartness of the yogurt.  Set aside once done.
  6. To assemble the sliders, put the sauce on the top and bottom bun.  Add a generous amount of spinach, tomato slices and a falafel patty to each!
